The Kukri Knife
We’re not going to sugarcoat this: the Kukri knife is one of the most intimidating weapons you can get your hands on. The blade is about 12 inches long, and it’s so heavy that you can actually hear it clang as you swing it.
But, at the same time, the Kukri is quite easy to wield and makes great use of your body weight to do damage. The weight and heft of the blade also make it extremely safe to use in close quarters. And, because it’s a curved blade, it allows for an incredibly wide range of motion, which is a really great feature to have when fighting back.
The Kukri is also incredibly versatile. It’s great for everyday use, but it’s also perfect for camping or hiking. It makes a great camping knife and a great bushcraft tool. In fact, many people have used it to fish, carve, make fires, or for other self-defense purposes.
If you’re wondering whether or not the Kukri knife is for you, it’s also a good idea to check out a couple of our other top rated knives. They have many more videos, so be sure to check them out!

Beat knives for self-defense?
Hi,
Not sure if anyone on this forum is familiar with this style of knives, however I have had mine for about a year and now that the weather has got warmer I have started using them to cut branches and other vegetation.
I bought a Kershaw KK5, this knife has a very nice feel to it when cutting, the handle feels very light when used. The blade has a very high sharpness which makes it good for cutting wood/stump as well as smaller branches.
I started using the knife on the ground, I have managed to slice a few small trees and smaller bushes without much trouble.
I then started using the knife to cut down larger trees with branches, I was surprised at how much easier it was with the knife compared to an axe. I’ve been using the knife a few times now and its become a very comfortable weapon to use when faced with an encounter with a much larger tree.
I believe that most people who are familiar with cutting trees on a daily basis will agree that a knife is much better than an axe in this situation. As I have mentioned before when using the knife you are more able to maintain control over the knife, not over-power it and not cause the knife to become stuck or twisted.
Also I’m not afraid to use it to defend myself, even though I’m not a huge fan of knives I am learning the importance of sharpening it, I can see why people like to use knives, especially with the weather turning warmer I would imagine you are more in need of something to defend yourself with in certain situations.
I can’t get an answer on this forum to whether this is a good knife to carry or not. Has anyone here ever used a knife to cut through branches? Is it good to keep as a daily carry knife? Is it overkill? Or is this knife a tool for an everyday carry, or a self defence knife for use only when the need arises.
If you use this kind of knife as a daily carry, I’d look for something else.
You’re going to cut into bone on occasion. That is a common thing for a tree-cutter. You want to know what to do when you’ve cut through bone. It happens. When you do it, it’s bone. And you need to keep a clear head when you do it. Think through the process. Is it sharp enough? Does it have enough of a cutting edge? How much force can you exert on the edge? Is it stable? How about leverage? It’s a lot of work to keep it from slipping, which is usually the way it goes wrong. But it is so common that people get into the habit. And I have seen a few accidents where the process was too easy and they went too far and cut through bone. No good.
This is a good knife for a weekend warrior. It does its job, but it is not a survival tool. It doesn’t take a lot of thinking to do what you want to do with this knife.
I think you could get some more use out of it by starting out with a lighter, thinner blade, and then you might feel more comfortable using it as a self defense tool.
Yes. It’s called machete, and it’s quite useful in that regard. It’s been around a very long time. My wife and I spent a few months in Belize, in the jungle, chopping coconuts for sap. My axe got lost, and so we carried one of these out there. It worked well. It was much lighter than my ax, and just as useful.
If you’re going to cut through trees to move them, you want a light knife.
I agree with a few of the posts above. Although I think it could be carried in places, I wouldn’t suggest it, unless there is no axe available. I don’t think this is what you want for every day carry. It’s probably overkill. I might suggest a good axe.
Having said that, it might be worth learning how to cut with the knife. If you work your way around getting more experience cutting things, you may get to where you can do a pretty good job with the knife.
This has been debated quite a bit. The knife isn’t the safest thing in your hand. It is best in the hands of the experienced. Many of us like to run a blade through the “X” on a door for those times where you need to use it. A car door is a bit difficult. So, you can get some real nasty things in there.
